Certificate – weighted sound reduction index Rw = 32 dB – MLV assembly with a soft layer

Laboratory measurement of the sound insulation (how much sound does not pass through a partition) of an MLV assembly with a soft layer at the independent Riverbank Acoustical Laboratories (USA, NVLAP accreditation, ISO/IEC 17025), report TL13-133 from 2013. The measured values give a weighted sound reduction index of Rw = 32 dB according to the European standard EN ISO 717-1.

How much sound the assembly stops

The chart shows how many decibels of sound the assembly stops at each frequency, from deep bass on the left to highs on the right. In the bass it is 21–22 dB (125–250 Hz), in the mids 29–31 dB (630–800 Hz) and in the highs 39–46 dB (2.5–5 kHz). From these values a single number is calculated according to EN ISO 717-1, Rw = 32 dB, which lets you easily compare materials. The detailed PDF version contains the step-by-step Rw calculation and the original laboratory report.

What this means for the door panels

The NovaSilence and FrontSilence door panels are built on the same principle as the measured assembly: a heavy MLV layer complemented by a soft layer. The panels themselves were not measured. The measured assembly is somewhat heavier than our panels (7.7 vs. 6.5–7.0 kg/m² depending on the surface), so the value of the panels may be somewhat lower. The values apply to the material; once hung on a door, gaps around the door also affect the result.
