Why do acoustic blankets come in different weights but have the same sound absorption?

Our acoustic blankets come in different sizes, which is why their weight differs. They are all made of the same acoustic material, however, so the same sound absorption values apply to all of them.

Sound absorption is measured on a sample of the material using a standardised method in a reverberation room. Our blankets were measured by the independent Riverbank Acoustical Laboratories (USA), and according to EN ISO 11654 the weighted sound absorption coefficient is αw = 0.75 for one blanket hung flat, αw = 1.00 for one blanket hung in folds and αw = 1.00 for two blankets one behind the other.

In practice, the more sound-absorbing material you have in a room, the more sound it absorbs – as long as its surface is as exposed as possible so that sound can reach it. Blankets hung around the room a few centimetres away from the walls therefore work much better than a stack of folded blankets in a corner.
